Star Wars Shatterpoint Paint Guide: Clone Troopers

We have the Separatists represented, so let’s move on to the Republic! Starting out with Clone Troopers, the techniques here can be used for any legion - and will also work for the white armour on characters like Obi-Wan, or would work for Stormtroopers if/when that era gets into the game.

NOTE: With minor variations, this guide also serves for Rex and Cody, assuming you build them with helmets. A separate guide may come later with the recipe for their faces - which applies to any Clone Trooper released in future with a bare head option.

Lastly, this one has a paint-along video available on YouTube, going through the whole process start to finish. Check it out!

Primer: Mechanicus Standard Grey (Citadel)

Base Coats: 50/50 Administratum Grey & Bold Titanium White, Corvus Black
Wash: Apothecary White Contrast

To start out, the mini gets an all-over coverage of that Administratum Grey/Bold Titanium White mix to create a nice off-white base to work with.

Next up, Corvus Black for the undersuit, as well as detailing on the helmet. Finally, all the white gets a wash with Apothecary White Contrast to get some nice shading going.

Note that while I used Mechanicus Standard Grey for my primer, a lighter primer would arguably work better - I just primed all the set at once and was lazy.

Armour: 50/50 Administratum Grey & Bold Titanium White
Gun: Dark Silver
Wash: Black Templar Contrast

This stage is super straightforward - just going back over flat panels with the original armour mix to smooth out the texture and cover up any coffee-staining from the contrast. Just make sure to leave the recesses alone.

For the gun, I wanted a really dull black metal look to it, so a base of Dark Silver followed by a Black Templar coat achieves that better than a typical Nuln Oil or similar was would have.

Edge Highlights: White Scar
Legion Markings: Averland Sunset (212th Legion), Kantor Blue (501st Legion)

Edge highlights of White Scar to make the edge of the armour pop a bit - Clone Trooper armour is much more rounded, so I would just focus on the raised edges rather than going all the way around.

For the markings, I was working simultaneously on the Core Set as well as the Hello There pack, so had both the 501st and 212th to do - I studied a bunch of shots from Clone Wars as well as various action figures to get the markings down, but with so many clone legions out there, just have fun with it if you want to design your own!

Chipping: 50/50 Administratum Grey & Bold Titanium White, Eshin Grey
Edge Highlights: Filigree Silver

Clone Troopers go through a lot, so I wanted to make sure the armour looked suitably battle-worn. Using an old bit of packing sponge, I first went back to the base armour colour to chip away at some of the markings to make it look worn, then repeated the process with Eshin Grey, this time trying to target the chest and outer armour where chipping would most likely take place.

Lastly, a quick and dirty bit of edge highlighting for the gun just to make the edges stand out a bit, and we’re done!
